Jon Moxley recently signed a five-year contract extension with AEW, and with it known he loathed much of his time on the WWE’s main roster, this wasn’t a surprise. And with the press release announcing this saying, “moving forward, Moxley will work exclusively for AEW and its international partners, including New Japan Pro Wrestling,” it seemed like his days working indies were over. However, in the latest issue of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it has been reported that this isn’t wholly accurate, as while Khan didn’t initially want him working indies, he will still be permitted, just for fewer of them. Furthermore, it was added Moxley won’t be promoted beforehand and instead make surprise appearances.
During the negotiations, Moxley wanted a deal to continue to do independent shows while Khan wanted him to no longer do them. In time, they agreed to it but Moxley will likely be doing far fewer shows, but like before, Khan has to approve them but in the past he didn’t turn them down. But Moxley has decided to change how he does them.
He expects to do indies when he wants to, but will not be advertised on those shows or have shows built around him as the drawing card. Moxley was by far the biggest drawing card on the indie scene but of late had cut back to only doing shows with promotions that he likes. His feeling is that if he is advertised to be on a show, he won’t want to pull out of the show if hurting, or if he just feels like spending a weekend with his family because of the commitment. He said he’s looking at the idea of if he feels good and wants to wrestle, he will come to a show as a surprise, show up the day of, comparing it to a famous comedian that shows up at a small club with no notice just to either have fun or try out new material.
It should be noted that while Moxley was a GCW regular, it seems highly unlikely he’ll be working on their shows under any circumstances due to Khan apparently not wanting any of his talent performing for the promotion. It was also speculated that Khan didn’t even want Moxley dropping the title to Gage but went along with it due to Moxley’s insistence. And while the specific reason for Khan not wanting anything to do with GCW, it is known GCW has been in touch with WWE in the past, with their owner Brett Lauderdale photographed with Stephanie McMahon. In addition, and seemingly playing into this, former AEW wrester Joey Janela, who is currently one of GCW’s best-known wrestlers, has been tweeting about supporting WWE.
