During the March 19 episode of Dynamite, Jon Moxley took one of the sickest bumps ever broadcast on television when he landed on a spiked bat that punctured his back. Subsequently, fan reactions were mixed, with some appreciating the fact that AEW was pushing limits, while others were horrified and concerned about Moxley’s health. And now, while being interviewed on the Way of the Blade podcast, AEW’s head honcho, Tony Khan, has described the bump as “a great wrestling moment” and revealed that it has brought in new fans thanks to going viral.

“When Mox had the spike bat in his back, that was a great wrestling moment,it was memorable, it helped drive box office for us, it was the highest-rated episode of the year. It went viral. It’s one of the most-watched videos of the year. It’s probably the most-watched video of the year in AEW. It’s a fantastic moment. It made new fans and created interest. It was on TMZ. There are people who weren’t watching AEW that saw it. It brought outside fans in and created casual interest.”Tony Khan

While some fans were shocked that Moxley, who has been part of mainstream pro wrestling since signing a developmental deal with WWE in 2011, would take such a bump, he actually made his name in promotions known for their deathmatches, such as CZW and IWA-MS. Therefore, while this bump was extreme, the current AEW Champion was comfortable doing it, seemingly feeling the risk-reward ratio was to his advantage.
