In sad news, Rey Mysterio announced a month ago that his father, Roberto Gutierrez, had passed away at the age of 76. Obviously, this was a massive loss to the WWE Hall of Famer, and now, adding to his misery, AAA has announced that his uncle Rey Mysterio Sr, real name Miguel Ángel López Díaz, has also died. In addition to Rey, Mysterio Sr. is survived by his own son Miguel Aarón, who wrestles under the name El Hijo de Rey Misterio, which in Spanish means “The Son of the Mystery King.”
Rey Misterio Sr. started out as a boxer in the early 70s but soon decided to pursue pro wrestling. And while he would never achieve the same success as his nephew, he would notably represent Mexico alongside Konnon during the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup” at Starrcade 1990. Still, his true legacy will always be that of a trainer, introducing names like Konnan, Psicosis, Extreme Tiger, Halloween, Damian 666, Cassandro, and his nephew into the business.
