Chris Jericho’s alter ego, “The Painmaker,” is returning to New Japan to wrestle Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 14 on January 5th, and the hype has now started.
A creepy video aired during New Japan Pro Wrestling’s World Tag League event showing Jericho in his Painmaker gear and makeup surrounded by a group of followers dressed like him.
Jericho would state:
“Time’s running out Tanahashi, January 5th is only weeks away. Only weeks away from The Painmaker vs. The Ace at the Tokyo Dome. It’s going to be the greatest match of your career; it’s also going to be the last match of your career.”
Wrestle Kingdom 14 will air on NJPWworld.com, and you can watch the full promo video below building the match.
It’s seemingly WWE release day after Sin Cara and Luke Harper were released earlier today. Now you can add The Ascension to the list.
WWE would confirm this on WWE.com saying:
WWE has come to terms on the releases of Jonathan Huber (Luke Harper), Sin Cara and Ryan Parmeter (Konnor) and Eric Thompson (Viktor) of The Ascension. WWE wishes them all the best in their future endeavors.
They didn’t even give them their own separate announcement, they just added them to the previous announcements on the site.
Konnor and Viktor are still the longest-reigning NXT Tag Team Champions, having held the titles for 364 days. Things, though, went wrong for them once they were called up to the main roster after a brief initial push. The pair quickly flopped as they were openly a rip off of The Powers of Pain, The Road Warriors, and Demolition, which was a dated gimmick, and they fell well short of those teams in terms of charisma and presence.
They’ve hardly been used in recent times, and it seemed a case of the pair running down their contracts until they left WWE, but instead, they have been cut early.
Shortly after, it was announced that Sin Cara had been released, WWE would also reveal Luke Harper has also been released from his contract.

He had requested his release earlier this year, and WWE declined because they feared he would go to AEW. Then to add insult to injury, they added the time he had missed with injury to his contract taking his expiry date from November 2019 to April 2020.
He has been preparing for life after WWE by trademarking his previous indie name Brodie Lee on November 26th.
It isn’t known if there were any clauses in his release, or if he will have to wait 90 days to compete, but it is expected he’ll be in AEW and/or New Japan sooner rather than later.
After initially requesting his release last month, Jorge Arias, who wrestled as both Hunico and the second Sin Cara has announced he has received his release from WWE today.
He would thank the WWE Universe on his Twitter account this afternoon.
Arias has a reputation as a tough guy, and it is thought he is looking into getting into MMA, specifically with Combate Americas, who were the promotion that put on Tito Ortiz vs. Alberto El Patron last night. He was a training partner for Alberto, and in attendance at the show, so he has the connections.
As for the Sin Cara gimmick, it is owned by WWE, so it could be used by another wrestler in the future, although at this stage there isn’t much value left in it.
Tito Ortiz Defeats Alberto El Patron In MMA Match To Win One Of His WWE Championship Belts
Combate Americas held the biggest show ever on Saturday night, headlined by Tito Ortiz vs. Alberto “El Patron” Rodriguez. It was billed as MMA vs. Pro Wrestler, with Ortiz putting up one of his UFC belts, and Alberto one of his WWE Championships.
Ortiz went in as heavy betting favorite given his vast experience in the sport, although Alberto did have a record of 9-5 in MMA going into the fight, which included a loss to Mirko Cro Cop where he wore his Lucha mask.
The match itself wasn’t that great as Alberto didn’t put up much of a fight and was submitted by rear-naked choke in 3:10. You can watch the finish for yourself below.
We will have to wait and see if Alberto decides to fight in MMA again, it’ll probably come down to if anyone is willing to pay him, but given that performance I doubt it.
After making a surprise appearance for MLW on Thursday and rejoining the company, ACH has done an about-turn on his wrestling career. He has canceled all upcoming bookings and quit the business.
He would post the below on Twitter announcing this.

MLW would comment on his announcement saying:
“We respect ACH’s decision and want him to be happy.”
When ACH inevitably decides to wrestle again, it will be interesting to see how many promotions are willing to book him.
Walter is in Chicago for tonight’s Evolve show wrestling in the main event against the EVOLVE Champion Josh Briggs, but he is having an awful day.
His rental car was broken into, and both the WWE UK Championship Belt and his passport were stolen.
The area he was parked in was Logan Square, which is suffering a spate of similar incidents at the moment. It’s also been reported that Timothy Thatcher has had items stolen.
Hopefully, the belt is recovered soon; otherwise, some kid is going to get a unique Christmas present.
On the latest Talk Is Jericho, Chris and his Inner Circle stablemate Sammy Guevara spoke about the creation of the group and who else was discussed as potential members.
As you know, the group consists of Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Santana, Ortiz, and Jake Hager. But it was almost very different as Jericho would tell Guevara.
“One of the ideas originally was The Lucha Brothers, and I thought they were too much like superheroes. I wanted killers, and Santana and Ortiz were perfect. I suggested MJF, but it was like we should keep him on his own, and then your name was mentioned. Perfect, Sammy’s great. Now we need a big guy…They wanted to use a boxer they had just signed from the UK, and I was like nah he’s not big enough. I said, ‘Hager’s the guy.’ So we got him, and the whole get together was very much each guy plays a role and has a certain part within the circle.”
So there you have it, the group could have easily been Jericho along with The Lucha Brothers, MJF, and Anthony Ogogo.

It’s been an eventful few days for MLW having ACH rejoin the promotion fresh off his WWE release, and then the release of one of their top stars Teddy Hart.
ACH returned to the promotion at last night’s Opera Cup tapings in New York as King Mo’s surprise partner against Kotto Brazil and Jordan Oliver. He has also been announced for the MLW’s TV tapings in Dallas on Saturday, January 11.
It hasn’t been confirmed if ACH has signed a contract with the promotion, but as he has said at other indie shows he has been on that he has no intention to sign with anyone again, it’s likely a per night deal.
The other big announcement coming from MLW was the news they have released Teddy Hart. They would issue a press release that was very to the point, just saying:
“Major League Wrestling has come to terms on the release of Teddy Hart.”
We’ve tried all day to find out the reason, and nobody is talking. It isn’t the first time he has been fired from a promotion, and probably won’t be his last.
There have been rumors going around social media about his friendship with convicted sex offender Chaysn Rance, and the disappearance of Samantha Fiddler back in 2016. She was being training by them to become a wrestler and had dated Hart previously. Hart has stated
This likely has nothing to do with his release, but the timing is interesting. He did lose an indie booking, and then MLW had him drop the MLW title and did not book him for their Opera Cup event.
Thanksgiving eve’s numbers were disappointing for AEW, they won most of the demos, but the over 50’s was again a significant problem them. NXT would go on to win the week by 147,000 viewers.
This week they bounced back and won the week by 6,000 viewers.
AEW Dynamite increased from 663,000 average viewers to 851,000 viewers, and NXT increased from 810,000 average viewers to 845,000 viewers.
AEW had The Young Bucks and Dustin Rhodes beating Santana, Ortiz, and Sammy Guevara. The introduction of the Lexicon of Le Champion setting up a match against Jungle Boy for next week, and Jon Moxley defeating Joey Janela int he main event.
NXT featured Killian Dain defeating Pete Dunne, Matt Riddle beating Kassius Ohno, and Keith Lee, Tomasso Ciampa, and Dominik Dijakovic defeating Undisputed Era in the main event.
Six thousand viewers is within the margin of error, but I’m sure AEW will take the win given how badly the lost week.
Last night on AEW Dynamite, Chris Jericho would introduce “The Lexicon of Le Champion.” Jericho was quick to point out that this is not the same as The List, that he famously used in WWE.
He would say:
“Seriously, get out of 2016, this is not The List any longer, it is the Lexicon of Le Champion.”
The list contains a list of everyone he refuses to wrestle in 2019. It includes Jon Moxley, Cody Rhodes, Hangman Page, Diamond Dallas Page, Paige, Moxley, the chubby guy with the popcorn in the fifth, Moxley and many others.
You can hear the full list below.
