Halloween Havoc was an iconic World Championship Wrestling pay-per-view which ran from 1989 through 2000. Despite taking ownership of the name when purchasing WCW, Vince McMahon hadn’t previously utilized it because he hates to put over anything made successful by his former rivals. Seemingly though, the Wednesday Night Wars have mellowed his stance on that, as WWE is finally bringing back the event as a special edition of NXT on October 28th.
During the latest episode of his 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff podcast, the former President of WCW would share his opinion on WWE belatedly putting the name to use.
In July, WWE revived The Great American Bash, also a former WCW pay-per-view, as two special editions of NXT. These shows were a big success and resulted in two rare victories for NXT in the Wednesday Night Wars. This success likely prompted WWE to finally utilize the asset they’ve owned for almost 20 years.
Last week WWE was honored by PR News for their work on managing corporate responsibility programs and social good initiatives. Stephanie McMahon, who is WWE’s chief brand officer, took to Twitter to share this news and received a scornful reply from Jake Hager. The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and current AEW star clearly wasn’t impressed by WWE’s award and used Stephanie McMahon’s tweet as an opportunity to call WWE out on their business practices.
WWE controversially released many talents and furloughed staff earlier this year, with many never returning to work, despite the company making huge profits. While WWE does do great work supporting organizations like Make-A-Wish, Susan G. Komen, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, some people have called into question their motivation after Stephanie McMahon tweeted a quote saying that “philanthropy is the future of marketing” back in 2015.
Jake Hager is currently tagging with Chris Jericho in All Elite Wrestling, with the team 4-0 in their quest for the World Tag Team Championships. However, on Thursday, October 29th, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion is stepping away from the wrestling ring and will return to Bellator for his fourth MMA match at Bellator 250.
Hager is set to face fellow undefeated heavyweight Brandon Calton, who is 40 years old, 6’4″, and weighs 250lbs with the nickname “Bone Crusher.” He has a 5-0 amateur record and 2-0 professional record, with both wins coming via TKO this year. Odds haven’t yet been announced, but Hager is expected to be a heavy favorite considering his superior athleticism.
Pro wrestling documentary series Dark Side of the Ring has been a big success since it premiered on Viceland in April 2019. The second season’s finale on Owen Hart’s death even gave Vice its highest ever-rated program with 626,000 viewers. On top of that, the show had significant views on YouTube, with both official and unofficial uploads doing millions of views combined. So given that, and with so many fascinating topics still to cover, it seemed inevitable the show would return, and earlier today, a 14 episode third season was officially announced for 2021.
Currently, no topics for the third season have formally been revealed. However, tidbits have come out over recent months, with David Arquette letting slip in an interview he’d been spoken to about a potential Nick Gage episode. Eric Bischoff has also told listeners of his podcast that he was interviewed about Brian Pillman and the Collision in Korea show. Additional PWInsider has reported that Jake “The Snake” Roberts has been interviewed about his father Grizzly Smith, who he holds responsible for his substance abuse issues.
We reported yesterday that Luis Ángel Salazar, who wrestled as Príncipe Aéreo, passed away following a suspected heart attack while wrestling on Saturday night. However, the official medical report has now confirmed that his official cause of death was a ruptured middle cerebral artery, which is one of the arteries that supply blood to the brain.
The video circulating online showing his collapse starts mid-match and begins with Salazar receiving chops to the chest, which is why a heart attack was initially presumed.
Mexa Wrestling and Lucha Time, who were the were promoters behind the show Salazar was wrestling for at the time, have stated on Facebook that they will be covering all of his hospital and funeral costs.
Luis Ignacio Urive Alvirde, who currently wrestles as Carístico and previously wrestled as Místico, and was the first Sin Cara, accidentally revealed his face to fans on Saturday evening on a live stream. Seemingly thinking the stream had ended, he decided to remove his mask but was soon alerted by those watching he was still streaming. Unfortunately for him, screenshots were taken and almost immediately began being shared across social media.
Carístico has always been protective of his identity, and his real name wasn’t public knowledge for the first 16 years of his career. It was only revealed when WWE made it known when they released him from his contract in 2014.
Out of respect for the Lucha libre tradition of masked wrestlers keeping their face hidden, we haven’t embedded the photo in this article, although a blurred version is available on PRWrestling.com.
On Saturday night in Mexico City, Luis Ángel Salazar, who wrestled as Príncipe Aéreo, suffered an apparent heart attack while in the ring. The 26-year-old was competing for Mexa Wrestling at their Mexa War II event and collapsed following two relatively tame chops to the chest. He was treated at the arena by the doctor from the Mexico State Boxing and Fighting Commission but tragically passed away at the Torre Médica Santa Anita hospital.
Salazar had been studying for an accountancy degree to give him options outside of wrestling, and mostly wrestled for Mexican independent companies, although he had competed for AAA in tag matches. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
On October 13th WWE applied for several new trademarks, many were for the names of NXT UK talents, but one that stood out was “Dominick.” Conceivably this could mean that WWE is thinking about Dominik Mysterio dropping his legendary surname. It should be noted that WWE’s spelling does slightly differ from the way his legal name. This could either be an error on WWE’s lawyers part, or WWE wanting to own his name as fully as possible despite already applying for “Dominik Mysterio” back in September.
Trademarks are a big deal in pro wrestling, and Rey Mysterio already took the precaution to register the name “Prince Mysterio” for his son, which makes sense as Rey means King in Spanish. We will now have to see what happens with the Dominik Mysterio name as it isn’t uncommon for WWE to shorten a wrestler’s name after they’ve debuted. Examples of this include Antonio Cesaro, Elias Samson, Big E Langston, Natalya Neidhart, Adrian Neville, Alexander Rusev, Andrade Cien Almas, and Sheamus O’Shaunessy.
Despite not wrestling since WrestleMania 35, Ronda Rousey is still contracted to WWE, and although she has said she’d never work a full-time schedule again, it’s believed she is open to returning. Speculation has now commenced that she could be getting in ring shape after former TNA World Champion James Storm shared a photo with Rousey and her husband, Travis Browne.
The fact Rousey is spending some time in the ring doesn’t on its own mean she is getting ready to wrestle again. However, combined with the fact Paul Heyman hinted in a recent interview with The New York Post that she might have secretly signed a contract extension, it does seem a good possibility.
Shaul Guerrero, the daughter of the late great Eddie Guerrero, signed a developmental contract with WWE in 2010 and would wrestle in both FCW and NXT under the name of Raquel Diaz. Her in-ring career with WWE lasted until 2013, and she’d go on to receive her release in 2014, which was believed to have been a mutual decision as she was suffering from an ongoing eating disorder. After a four-year hiatus from the business, she would return as a ring announcer and work for numerous independent companies and also worked for AEW as a ring announcer for their AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup Tournament.
The third-generation wrestler is now set to resume her in-ring career on the independent circuit after training at Freelance Wrestling in Chicago and is booked to compete for Generation Championship Wrestling in Tampa, Florida, on November 13th. During a recent interview with Taeler Hendrix, she’d state she gained inspiration watching the success of Britt Baker and Big Swole in AEW and the hard work of both Jessicka Havok and Kylie Rae in Impact Wrestling.
Her return is undoubtedly likely to attract interest from all the major wrestling promotions. However, with her mother Vickie working for AEW, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Shaul make an appearance on AEW Dark or Dynamite over the next few months.
Bill Goldberg signed a three-year deal for two matches per year in early 2020. This year’s commitment has been fulfilled, but we are only 77 days away from 2021. It now looks like WWE may be looking to go back to their original WrestleMania 36 Universal Championship match idea, but this time with Goldberg challenging Reigns.
Goldberg began teasing this by posting on Instagram that he’ll be part of the WWE ThunderDome tonight to watch the Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman match on SmackDown.
Goldberg was expected to drop the Universal Championship to Reigns at WrestleMania, but it was changed to Strowman when Reigns decided to go home after The Miz turned up unwell.
