Former AEW Champion Jon Moxley has been on hiatus from the promotion since it was announced he needed to attend a residential alcohol treatment program. Since then, there haven’t been many updates, but this past weekend it was announced he was returning to the ring to defend his GCW World Championship against Homicide at the promotions January 23rd event. This news was quite surprising as it was expected his first wrestling appearance would be for AEW; however, now it has been publicized on social media he will be returning on this week’s Dynamite.
Moxey’s previous involvement in AEW was as part of the tournament to decide a number one contender for the AEW Championship, which saw him withdraw after defeating Preston Vance. Instead, Miro would take his place and compete in the final against Bryan Danielson, which is believed to have been his spot. So now he returns hopefully happy and healthy and ready to start a new program.
Eddie Kingston is currently experiencing a career-high, having wrestled CM Punk on pay-per-view and now working with Chris Jericho. Unfortunately, it has been reported by PWInsider that at this past weekend’s Dark tapings, Tony Khan announced to those in attendance that Kingston was injured. However, specific details were not provided, and it isn’t known how severe his injury is.
This is obviously bad news for both Kingston and AEW, yet it also comes as a blow to Game Changer Wrestling, who have their The WRLD on GCW show on the 23rd with Kingston penciled in to wrestle AJ Gray. That match is now off, although it is possible he could Kingston still attend to set up a future match.
Kingston has been busting his ass since 2002 to entertain fans, and over his career, he has experienced many ups and downs. Before making his AEW debut, he contemplated selling his boots. Still, thanks to fans clamoring for him to receive an opportunity with Khan’s promotion, he would get the chance to show the world what he could do and is one of the most over talents.
Last week the unfortunate news was broken by TMZ that Tammy Sytch, best known to wrestling fans Sunny, had been arrested. At the time, not much was known about the details except she was in possession of a weapon and made a terroristic threat. Later, it would be disclosed that what actually occurred was that she attempted to attack her boyfriend with a pair of scissors while a police offer was present. The officer would also say he believed she was intoxicated at the time.
Now though, the WWE Hall of Famer has taken to Facebook to speak to her fans directly. She would state that she is doing okay, keeping a low profile, and asked that media reports are not believed. Seemingly claiming that TMZ is mistaken with the facts they’ve reported.
In recent years, Sunny’s life has been troubled with legal issues, and she was incarcerated for the majority of 2019. After her release, she would subsequently be arrested again on July 13, 2020, while still on parole and charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended license, eluding a police officer, and violating her restraining order. This resulted in her being detained again until June 9, 2021.
Cody Rhodes is one of the wrestlers that first comes to mind with AEW, having been with the promotion from the start. Nevertheless, his future with the company could be in doubt as according to Fightful Select, his contract expired a the end of 2021, and he has not signed a new deal. Technically this means the TNT Champion is a free agent; however, the fact he is also an executive vice president would mean it is unlikely he could simply leave AEW without notice.
Initially, Rhodes was one of the most popular wrestlers on the AEW roster, but now he is routinely booed when appearing, despite being a babyface. Exactly why fans have turned on him isn’t totally clear, although taking absences to work on other projects is likely an issue. Of course, the logical solution would be to turn heel and embrace the adverse reaction. Yet, Cody has repeatedly stated he has no intention of doing that.
AEW held their latest Dark tapings at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, this past weekend, and among the wrestlers performing was former X-Division Champion Rohit Raju. He would wrestle Shawn Dean in a match, and those in attendance said it was a good match. However, despite arguably being a more famous name, he would put over Dean due to not being signed. This was Raju’s first match of 2022 and his second since departing Impact Wrestling in December.
41-year-old Raju is a 13-year veteran and began wrestling for Impact Wrestling in 2017 under the name Hakim Zane. Later, he would change his name to what he uses today and formed the Desi Hit Squad with Gurinder Singh. His career highlight came in 2020 when he won the X Division Championship from Chris Bey in a three-way match that also involved TJP. Four months later, he’d drop the title to TJP, who was wrestling as the Manik character.
Mustafa Ali last wrestled for WWE on the 29th October episode of SmackDown in a two-minute defeat against Drew McIntyre. Since then, he has been home, with it believed he was simply on paternity leave following the birth of his third child. However, he has seemingly been waiting to return for some time and has been working on an updated gimmick that is believed to be political in nature.
Now though, according to Fightful Select, that gimmick idea was rejected, and instead, Vince McMahon proposed an alternative. Apparently, this led to a heated argument between Ali and McMahon as it was something that Ali would never do. Subsequently, Ali hasn’t been seen backstage since and has requested his release from WWE, which he has publicly revealed on Twitter.
Whether he will be granted his release remains to be seen, as while the company has been releasing countless wrestlers, they prefer to let go on their own terms. This was evident when it came out that both Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado requested their own releases in September 2021, and it took two months until the company granted them along with multiple other wrestlers they were firing.
Ali has been with WWE since 2016, having spent the prior 13 years on the indies and working as a police officer. While always popular with fans, he never received a sustained push, and one point was off television for seven months. Upon his return, he would be put with Retribution as the group’s leader, which was always doomed for failure. Subsequently, he was paired with Mansoor as tag team so that they could be broken up and Mansoor could get a victory in his home county of Saudi Arabia.
Two months ago, news broke that Jon Moxley had entered a residential alcohol treatment program. Since then, AEW and Moxley have kept updates to a minimum. However, it appears that things have gone well for the former WWE and AEW Champion as his first match since his hiatus has now been revealed.
Game Changer Wrestling has now announced that Moxley, who is the promotions World Champion, will be defending the title against Homicide at their The WRLD On GCW event on January 23rd. This announcement comes as quite a surprise as it was expected that when Moxley’s return was announced, it would be for AEW. Yet, there is still the possibility he will appear this Wednesday on Dynamite.
Moxley became the GCW World Champion back in September 2021 when he defeated Matt Cardona in 75 seconds after making an unadvertised appearance. He would then defend the title against Nick Gage the following month, and with it not known the severity of Moxley’s alcohol issues, he would retain the title. Since then, the championship hasn’t been defended, although a #1 Contendership Rumble match was held on January 1st with Homicide winning.
Earlier this week, news broke that Tammy Sytch, best known to wrestling fans as Sunny, had been arrested and charged twice for illegally possessing a weapon as well as a charged for terroristic threats. However, at the time-specific details on what occurred had not been confirmed. Now, though TMZ has reported that based on court documents, it appears the WWE Hall of Famer threatened to kill her current boyfriend with a pair of scissors.
Apparently, a police officer witnessed the incident, and he believed she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. TMZ would also confirm that she is still currently incarcerated, which is understandable given her long criminal record and the nature of the offence.
Sunny’s life has been plagued with legal issues, and she spent most of 2019 incarcerated. She was subsequently arrested again on July 13, 2020, while still on parole and charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended license, eluding a police officer, and violating a restraining order. This resulted in her being incarcerated again until June 9, 2021.
MLW’s deal with FOX’s Tubi streaming service allegedly broke down last year due to WWE’s interference. This has resulted in MLW’s founder and CEO Court Bauer filing an antitrust lawsuit against WWE, where they also claim a WWE executive tried to warn Vice away from partnering with the New York-based promotion. Obviously, this is a bad look for WWE, and now their longtime lawyer Jerry McDevitt has spoken to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, where he states he believes MLW’s legal issue should actually be with Tubi. Additionally, he also took a shot at the promotions disappointing ratings when they did work with Vice.
If Tubi breached, then sue Tubi. As to Vice, WWE has no commercial relationship with them or for that matter any of the other dozens of content distribution entities with whom MLW could do a deal with if they had a commercially viable product. They put a show on Vice, if my memory serves me correctly after one of the Dark Side shows and lost most of the audience. I think I read they got 40,000 viewers. No wonder Vice did no further deal.
Jerry McDevittMLW is in a difficult position as they require a paying television deal to take them to the next level, yet, their ratings for the one-off special on Vice were incredibly disappointing, limiting their options. Given this, the companies long-term future may depend on holding WWE to account if they were really anti-competitive. However, it likely won’t be easy to prove, and WWE will probably fight every step of the way to avoid a payout.
Tommaso Ciampa looks set to join the main roster after losing the NXT Championship to Bron Breakker and working a Dark Match before SmackDown. Additionally, he would wrestle T-Bar on this week’s episode of Main Event, defeating the former Retribution member. Yet, rather than the match itself, fans who watched Main Event weren’t talking about the match afterward, but instead the fact Ciampa had dyed his trademark thick grey beard. This can be seen in the screenshots below.

Whether 36-year-old Ciampa made the decision himself or was instructed to do so by management isn’t known. However, it’s understood Vince McMahon isn’t a fan of grey hair, and this is why Kevin Nash would color his locks when he returned to the company in 2011. While the grizzled veteran look certainly worked for Ciampa in NXT, it did age him, so while it is likely an inconvenience for him, the effort could be worth it if it extends his WWE career.
On Sunday, Charlie Haas made his debut for Impact Wrestling at their latest set of television tapings. The 49-year-old would wrestle Josh Alexander; however, following the match, he was stretched out with it not apparent what had transpired. Tommy Dreamer would later confirm to fans in attendance that Haas was legitimately hurt but didn’t provide more information.
Now, Haas has taken to Twitter and let fans know he is okay and explained what happened. Additionally, he would announce he is now taking bookings around the country, having rekindled his passion for wrestling again.
Haas is best known to fans for his time with WWE, where he was part of The Worlds Greatest Tag Team with Shelton Benjamin. During that time, he met and married Jackie Gayda, the co-winner of the second Tough Enough series, and would have four children. Sadly, though, life hasn’t been easy for him following the couple’s divorce, and he had stepped away from the business somewhat, only really wrestling local Texas independents. Thankfully though, he seems reinvigorated, and it appears fans around the States will get an opportunity to watch him compete again in person.
After spending the majority of 2019 incarcerated, fans of Sunny had hoped she would be able to turn her life around when released in 2020. Sadly this wasn’t the case, as she was arrested again on July 13, 2020, while still on parole. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, eluding a police officer, and violating a domestic violence restraining order. This resulted in her being incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in New Jersey until June 9, 2021.
Unfortunately, though, for fans of the original diva, according to TMZ, she is back at the same prison as of Thursday morning. This time having been charged twice for illegally possessing a weapon as well as a charge for terroristic threats. TMZ could not verify the precise nature of the threats, although given weapons being involved, it certainly sounds serious.
The past few months have not been great for Sunny as she recently spent ten days hospitalized following gallbladder removal surgery. Plus, according to her social media accounts, she has been having problems in her love life and at one point claimed to have given up on men altogether. However, romance is likely not near the top of her priorities right now.
