In September 2021, former UFC fighter Paige VanZant made her AEW debut as part of Dan Lambert’s American Top Team, who were feuding with The Inner Circle. She would then return to the promotion in February 2022 to work with Brandi Rhodes. However, with Rhodes departing the company, she has instead commenced a program with Tay Conti. Now with her having officially signed with AEW, it has been revealed by Marc Raimondi of ESPN that she is currently training with Gangrel, clearly to prepare her for an upcoming match with Conti.
While Gangrel doesn’t have an extensive list of talents he instructed that went on to big things, he, along with Rikishi, trained Miro when they ran a school together in California. Which is something he can be proud of considering the success he has achieved in both WWE and AEW. How long she VanZant will be training under him isn’t known, but given the charisma she has already shown, with the appropriate training, she could be a massive star for AEW.
New AEW signing William Regal would cut an emotional promo during this week’s episode of Dynamite, where he made it seem he believes his life will be shortened due to the excesses of his past. While most fans who were watching assumed Regal was exaggerating for effect, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter would report that Regal was dealing with real health issues and described them as “serious.” However, Regal has now taken to Twitter to refute this, saying he is is “healthier than I’ve been in many years.“
Seemingly the confusion has come from Meltzer failing to clarify that the health issues Regal was dealing with were from the past. Most importantly, though, Regal has confirmed he is fine, which is fantastic news for everyone in the wrestling business, as he is undoubtedly one of the most beloved wrestlers in recent history for both fans and other performers.
William Regal recently ended two decades working for WWE after Triple H lost his influence over NXT and was deemed surplus to requirements. However, AEW’s Tony Khan would recognize how valuable a talent he is and decided to bring him into work both in front of the camera and backstage as soon as possible. Therefore, he would make his debut for the company at this past weekend’s Revolution pay-per-view aligning himself with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley and then cut an emotional promo on Dynamite.
During this promo, he would remark on not having long left and said he would end up being pushed around by his wife, seemingly in a wheelchair. At the time, it was thought he was simply exaggerating his age and the fact he’d taken a lot of punishment in the ring. Sadly though, in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has reported that Regal is genuinely dealing with serious health issues, with him opening up about this in an upcoming episode of Talk Is Jericho.
Apparently Regal’s health issues at this stage are far more serious than have ever come out and there is an interview that will be released next week that he did for Talk is Jericho that will detail them.
Dave MeltzerRegal has lived a hard life due to past substance abuse issues, and his in-ring style was always going to end up with him with a broken-down body. The fact he retired from the ring in 2013 when he was still in his early 40s seemingly confirmed this. Now all fans can do is hope that when the podcast drops, it is revealed that Meltzer has overstated the severity of Regal health concerns because for a man who has given so much of his life to the business, he deserves better than to end his days in distress.
A few weeks ago, news broke that Steve Austin was in talks to make an in-ring return at WrestleMania 38 to face Kevin Owens. Since then, there have been doubts about whether it will be a match or a confrontation, which likely won’t be known until the show. However, while fans are excited to see Austin return in any capacity, some have questioned why he is working with Kevin Owens and not a star at the level of Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, or even Goldberg. Now though, Chris Jericho, who has shared a ring with both Austin and Owens, has addressed this on the latest Kurt Angle Show podcast and explained why Owens is perfect for the role.
If Steve comes in, the best guy for the job is Kevin Owens because Kevin will sell it on the mic, he can go toe-to-toe with Steve. He has a comedy element to him that Steve has as well and probably really have because he can use that to his advantage because Kevin will sell perfectly. You can’t do that with Roman Reigns.
Kevin will be able to work with Steve exactly the way that Steve needs and can work, which is meat and potatoes. That’s Kevin Owens. He can do some flying and flipping, but if you ask him, he’d probably rather punch and kick you in the corner, and that’s Steve’s whole offensive plan. I think it’s a great idea and I would love to see it happen. Kevin has been using the Stunner for a while because Steve allowed him to. There’s your story.
Chris JerichoCurrently, the popular belief is Austin won’t wrestle, with Jim Ross recently disclosing that Austin wasn’t enthusiastic about competing again. However, while a brawl followed by a Stunner would satisfy most fans, there is always the possibility WWE delivers a match similar to The Rock defeating Erick Rowan in six seconds at WrestleMania 32. This would result in a ton of publicity for the company, and unlike Reigns or Lesnar, Owens would likely be ecstatic to partake, having been a boyhood fan of Austin.
Matt Hardy made his All Elite Wrestling debut on March 18, 2020, and two years later, he was joined by his brother Jeff for a Hardy Boyz reunion. So naturally, this would delight fans across social media, who can’t wait to see the legendary duo face the top tag teams in AEW. And now the 47-year old veteran has revealed on his Twitch channel that Tony Khan has extended his contract, so it corresponds with Jeff’s newly signed deal.
The brothers last teamed in 2019 and were SmackDown Tag Team Champions at the time. Unfortunately, Jeff suffered a legitimate knee injury, which resulted in them vacating the titles. This would lead to their contracts becoming out of sync due to management adding the time Jeff missed onto his Jeff’s deal. Now though, they are about to begin an independent tour with their first match together set for a Big Time Wrestling show in Massachusetts this Saturday.
William Regal made his AEW debut at this past weekend’s Revolution pay-per-view aligning himself with both Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson and would follow up with an interview on Dynamite. Unfortunately, while the interview was excellent and full of emotion, it would be reported that Regal went over his allocated time, and afterward, AEW had to revise the rest of the show. Now confirming this, Regal has taken to Twitter saying he had personally apologized to his new colleagues for going long.
It’s understood the floor manager was trying to get Regal to wrap up, but he seemingly didn’t notice, as it’s highly doubtful he would have purposely ignored them. Given he is new to the company, it’s understandable he would be worried that his new AEW co-workers are angry with him. Still, it seems unlikely anyone would hold it against him in the long term, considering how respected he is for his work in the ring as well as backstage.
Following the announcement of The Undertaker’s upcoming induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, the company aired an outstanding video package set to the music of Metallica and Kid Rock. Included in the video were comments from Vince McMahon, Roman Reigns, Mick Foley, and many more, and while former WWE commentator Jim Ross can be heard during the package, he would speak out during his Grilling JR podcast. With the legendary wrestling personality going as far as to suggest WWE was being vindictive towards him, seemingly for not including him more.
Is the wrestling war that volatile that the guy that was the soundtrack of the biggest moments in Undertaker’s career is eliminated? Is that authentic, or is it just being selfish or vindictive? It’s not like I walked out. It’s not like I left them high and dry somewhere or I didn’t do my job. It’s all optics, and that’s not fair to the fans.
Jim RossJim Ross began working for WWE in 1993 but was fired after suffering his first Bells palsy attack. Although, he would be brought back when McMahon needed cover due to the steroid trials. Yet, he was fired again after speaking to the Pro Wrestling Torch Newsletter. Despite this, he would return again and, to many, became the voice of the promotion due to commentating on countless memorable moments. However, following a disastrous WWE2K event he hosted in 2013, his contract wasn’t renewed, and he’d again depart the company. While he would return for occasional appearances and to call the main event of WrestleMania 33, he was never again a WWE regular and in 2019, signed a three-year deal with his contract employer AEW.
Currently, it’s believed Cody Rhodes is weighing up his options, but with WrestleMania 38 being just three weeks away, WWE has chosen an opponent for him if he does sign a contract with them. This was reported by Fightful Select, who say Seth Rollins is set to work with the former AEW star if he signs in time. Seemingly this indicates WWE is looking to place Rhodes on Raw and have him portal a babyface as Rollins is one of the company’s top heels.
Rollins was initially penciled in to face Shane McMahon at WrestleMania. Still, after how the Royal Rumble match was regarded as a flop, any plans involving him were dropped. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine WrestleMania without Rollins, and Rhodes would undoubtedly be a suitably high-profile rival for The Drip God. However, for WWE to build a match into something meaningful, Rhodes would likely need to debut next Monday. Which just happens to be taking place in Jacksonville, FL, where Rhodes would be very familiar to many fans in attendance.
Multiple fanbases have been called toxic over the years, with Star Wars, Fortnite, and Anime all being proposed as the most harmful. However, during Melissa Joan Hart’s What Women Binge podcast, Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks would say that in his opinion, pro wrestling has the most toxic fans. Acknowledging that while some fans do love the wrestlers, others truly hate them.
Wrestling has the most toxic fanbase in the world. They’re the worst. Honestly, there’s a lot of good fans, the ones that love you, love you. But the ones that hate you, they hate you.
Matt JacksonIf you spend any time on social media, you will undoubtedly know what Jackson is talking about, and he, along with his brother Matt have stepped away from Twitter on multiple occasions because of the abuse they receive. Precisely why The Young Bucks encounter so much hostility isn’t apparent. Still, it’s likely some emanates from fans of Jim Cornette, who refers to the brothers as “Pie-Faced Buck” and “Balding Buck” on his podcast. However, with Cornette not going anywhere despite his past racist and sexist remarks, things likely won’t improve for The Young Bucks anytime soon.
The formation of The Inner Circle led by Chris Jericho and consisting of Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz was the big angle coming out of the premiere episode of AEW Dynamite back in October 2019. Since then, the group has been one the most prominent in the promotion, and it was thought the faction would remain together for years to come. Yet, following unrest in the group between Jericho and Santana and Ortiz, Sammy Guevera would quit to focus on his singles career last month, and now The Inner Circle has officially disbanded.
The angle breaking up the faction took place at the start of Dynamite, with Jericho expected to shake Eddie Kingston’s hand following his defeat at Revolution. Instead, however, 2point0 and Daniel Garcia would join them in the ring and initially attacked both men. However, this would turn out to be a ploy, as when Santana and Ortiz came out to make the save, Jericho would turn on them. Thus the Jericho Appreciation Society consisting of Jericho, 2point0, Garcia, and Jake Swagger was formed.
AEW will now be hoping that aligning 2point0 and Garcia with Jericho will help take the trio to the next level, which is what happened with Santana and Ortiz and especially Guevera. And now it seems a feud between the Jericho Appreciation Society and Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz will be a focal point of AEW television for the next few months.
With Jeff Hardy’s WWE non-compete running out earlier this week, it was a matter of time before Jeff Hardy made his AEW debut. Seemingly not wanting to waste any time, Tony Khan would introduce him at the first opportunity with him appearing during Dynamite saving his brother Matt along with Sting and Darby Allin from A.H.F.O. who Andrade El Idolo now leads.
Many fans on social media were wondering how Jeff was able to enter using the old-school Hardy Boyz theme music, and this is explained by the fact WWE doesn’t own this, and AEW has simply licensed it themselves. Presumably, the plan is now for the Hardy Boyz to reunite for the first time since April 2019, and they’ll likely face off with Private Party and The Butcher and The Blade in the coming weeks.
WWE fired Jeff following a bizarre incident where he walked out of a match on a houseshow in December. And while he was drug tested and later shown to be clean, WE had already released him. They would endeavor to bring him back by offering to put him into their Hall of Fame, but he declined when told Matt couldn’t be inducted alongside him.
The start of Miro’s AEW wasn’t the best due to him being aligned with Kip Sabian and having a gamer gimmick. However, everyone involved seemingly realized this wasn’t working, and Miro would evolve into “The Redeemer” and “God’s Favorite Champion,” becoming one of the best characters and performers in the promotion. In recent months he has been absent from television, with it believed to be a creative decision, and seemingly, Tony Khan has big plans for him. As according to Fightful Select, the former WWE star has recently signed a four-year contract extension.
AEW has re-signed Miro to a four-year extension, that will keep him with the company until at least the start of 2026. We’re told that the deal was agreed upon late last year, but didn’t get signed for a little while after that.
FightfulSelect.comMiro looked like a can’t miss talent when he was wrestling for WWE under the name Rusev. Yet Vince McMahon’s company would end up booking him to look like a fool after his real-life and on-screen wife Lana left him for Bobby Lashley. While Miro was promised a WrestleMania main event out of the feud, he would subsequently end up buried with Lashley consistently winning on television, while Miro would only prevail on house shows via disqualification. Having lowered his stock, WWE would release him as part of their budget cuts, and since signing for AEW, Khan has been focused on rebuilding him.
