It’s well-known that under Vince McMahon, WWE’s creative plans changed frequently, with short-notice revisions being something talents just had to accept. And now, an example of how late in the day things could alter, Mustafa Ali has told Chris Van Vliet that he was booked to win the 2019 men’s Money In The Bank ladder match but was informed while Baron Corbin’s entrance music was playing that someone else was actually going to come out and tip over the ladder to prevent him winning.
“All day we’re putting this match together, everyone’s like, ‘Hey, man, congrats.’ Yeah, man, this is awesome. I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I can get this briefcase to light up,’ because I was wearing the light of stuff at the time. I’m thinking this is one of those Cloud 9 moments, I can’t believe this is happening … Jamie Noble comes up. ‘Hey, boss man wants to talk to you. Go talk to the boss.’
Now, mind you Gorilla is completely dark, so I just have these red lights that are flashing on Vince’s face. And he’s all shadowy. So you can see the picture that I see right looking up at him, he goes, ‘Change of plans. Do the match, everything you called. When the time’s right, I want you to climb up the ladder and grab the briefcase. Someone’s going to come out. I want you to hold the briefcase and just have shock on your face. He’s gonna run down, tip the ladder over, and you stay down.’”
Mustafa AliFor those with short memories, the unannounced entrant was Brock Lesnar, who, after claiming the briefcase, would go on to cash in against Seth Rollins after he and Becky Lynch had just won a grueling tag match against Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans at Extreme Rules. Still, it seems doubtful that McMahon decided for Lesnar to win the briefcase just mere moments before the match, and in this instance, it was more likely WWE’s old boss was lying to talents to avoid a potential spoiler rather than it being a simple change of plans.
