If you’re new to WWE, you’ve possibly never even heard of former ring announcer Mel Phillips, as the company went out of its way to remove him from its history. The reason for this is that Phillips, who had a foot fetish, allegedly used his role in the company to take advantage of underage ring boys. Yet, while most assumed this scandal was confined to the past, it recently returned after a law firm representing five of his victims filed a lawsuit with the Maryland Supreme Court against Vince McMahon, his estranged wife Linda, and WWE’s parent company TKO last year.
And now, PostWrestling.com has reported that the current United States Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, has officially filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit due to having no sufficient connection to Maryland. This is significant as Maryland’s Child Victims Act appeals the statute of limitations for such cases and is likely why the lawsuit was filed in the Old Line State.
Phillips joined WWE in the 1970s, and one of his responsibilities was recruiting and managing young boys to help put up the ring. At this time, it was an open secret that he had an inappropriate interest in children, and he was eventually fired in 1988. Still, he would end up being rehired on the condition that he stay away from kids in the future. However, once his unacceptable behavior became known in the media, WWE permanently fired him in 1992.
